What is Panama Disease?

Panama disease is the plant disease. It affects the root of the plant of the Banana. It is caused by fungal Infection.Fusarium Oxysporum is the Fungus that causes the Panama Disease. When it attacked banana farms in 1950s, It wiped out the entire Gros Michel Banana in the entire world except in asia.

Symptoms of the disease:-

1. Yellow leafs
2. Wilted leaf
3. Steam splitting.

This fungus comes from the soil and it enters into the Plant through roots and occupies the vascular system, which supplies nutrients and water to the plant. This occupation blocks the water and nutrient and causes the disease in the Plant.

The Panama disease caused by a soil-borne fungus is threatening banana crops across Kerala, posing a potential crisis for farmers, even as global efforts to control the disease gain momentum.
